This trial compares 28 cultivars and advanced selections in a matted-row system. The trial was planted in May of 2002, so it's still too early to draw conclusions, as the plants first harvest year will be 2003. Plants tested include commercial industry standards, and recently-released cultivars or selections from breeding programs at USDA-Beltsville, Cornell University, the cooperative MD/NJ/VA/WI breeding program, the University of Minnesota, North Carolina State University, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Nova Scotia and Quebec, plus two cultivars from Europe. Of particular interest are the recently available cultivars 'Darselect' and 'Eros', 'Brunswick', 'Sable', 'Cabot', and 'Evangeline', and the soon-to-be-released selection 'B440'. During the first year, there were large differences in the growth habit of the cultivars and selections. Stay tuned for results.
