Strawberry Plasticulture in a Cold Climate

Strawberry PlasticultureThis experiment, conducted from 1999-2002 compared the cultivars 'Chandler', 'Camarosa', 'Sweet Charlie', 'Avalon', 'Allstar' and 'Latestar' when established in mid-August, late August, and mid-September. Yields were highest when plants were established in mid-August, with a delay of only 2 weeks decreasing yields by nearly half during the first harvest year. Yields were extremely low when the planting date was delayed until mid-September. 'Chandler' and 'Camarosa' were the best overall performers for yield and quality during the first harvest season in 2001, though 'Latestar' produced higher yields. During the second (carryover) harvest season, marketable yields of 'Chandler' and 'Camarosa' were lower compared to 2001, partly due to smaller fruit size and partly due to infection of some plots by anthracnose fruit rot.
